WOMEN diagnosed with breast cancer while working at the ABC’s Brisbane studios might pursue a class-action lawsuit, a lawyer says.
ABC management ordered the closure of the building at Toowong on Thursday after an independent study found female employees reported breast cancer at a rate of up to 11 times higher than the general working community.
Twelve female workers have contracted breast cancer over the past 11 years, but the cause remains a mystery.
Brisbane-based Shine Lawyers’ litigation partner Simon Morrison said victims could pursue class action because their cancer seemed to have been triggered by a common cause.
Shine Lawyers is representing one of the victims.
Mr Morrison said that despite ABC management’s argument it acted “as promptly and reasonably as it could”, he believed the victims’ concerns should have been addressed earlier.
Almost 100 ABC staff members walked off the job in July to demand a move from the Brisbane studios.
